WHELAHAN Michael Joseph 1854-1926

Michael Joseph Whelahan was born in Kinglass in Ireland c 1854. Like so many others the family came over c 1849 during the great Potato Famine.

He was the son of Patrick Whelahan

Michael was also the brother of Maria Whelahan who married Andrew Stanton and who were the great grandparents of Denis Madigan Stanton [author’s husband]

Michael’s father Patrick had for a while worked in Lanarkshire in the Iron Mills.  He returned home to Ireland and then returned  to Edinburgh with his wife Bridget McDonald and family.   The couple had been married on 6th October 1845 in County Rosscommon in Ireland.

1901 the whole family at 57 Nicholson Street, Edinburgh.  Margaret Grant is described as his mother-in-law. Also interesting to see that the flat had 4 rooms. The building is still there today.

  • Son Patrick John Whelahan 1882-1959. He married Margaret McGinness. They moved to an address nearby at 49 Nicolson Street West. Their son Michael Joseph Whelahan was lost at Sea WW2 and their is a memorial with his name is St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
  • Daughter Margharita Whelahan 1885-1963 married James Devlin. They had a large family who mainly remained around Edinburgh
  • Daughter Maria Whelahan 1887-1968. She never married.
  • Son Father Michael Whelahan 1889-1949. He died in Lourdes . Notes for MICHAEL WHELAHAN 1889-1949 Educated Blairs 1905-07; Valladoid 1907-16. Ordained Edinburgh 1917.   • Son Robert 1892-1892
  • Daughter ELIZABETH WHELAHAN 1894-197 St. Alban’s Road Edinburgh. She lived with sister Maria
